Class 3 Asphalt Shingles | McCann’s Roofing & Construction

Class 3 Asphalt Shingles

Class 3 asphalt shingles are just a step up from the standard class, offering extra resistance to withstand some of Oklahoma’s most extreme weather. These shingles strike the perfect balance between durability, affordability, and performance, making them an excellent option for those wanting stronger impact resistance without the higher price tag of the Class 4 options.

At McCann’s Roofing & Construction, we’re proud to partner with Malarkey as the premier Class 3 shingle manufacturer. Whether you’re replacing an aging roof or needing repairs after a storm, our team is happy to help find the right asphalt shingle type and color for your roof.

Class 3 vs. Class 4 Shingles

Asphalt shingles are primarily classified based on how well they can withstand the simulation of hail by using steel balls dropped from 12 feet. On pure technical terms, Class 4 shingles are rated for a 2-inch steel ball impact, while Class 3 shingles are rated for 1.75 inches.  Because Class 4 shingles offer the highest level of protection against severe hail and storm damage, many insurance companies offer premium discounts or better terms for homeowners with these shingles. However, Class 3 shingles still provide strong mid-level protection and often qualify for partial insurance savings, depending on your provider in your region. Another aspect to compare between Class 4 and Class 3 shingles is the pricing. Typically, Class 4 shingles can be 15% to 25% more expensive than their Class 3 counterparts. This is why many homeowners choose Class 3 shingles for their balance between solid protection and affordability; Class 4 shingles, however, tend to have longer lifespans and reduced repair costs in the long run. It’s essential to work with your local roofing contractor to review the pros and cons of the two shingle classes to determine which would best suit your needs.
